    Nothing But the Blues

Debuted at New Zealand Fringe Festival 2017 in Wellington, this is an hour of rocking Blues, presenting songs from Heaven Bound, along with classic favourites from the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and more. The musical themes will be familiar to blues fans: soul searching, lost love, distant trains, dusty roads and alcohol!

‘...sounds like the bastard son of Tom Waits and Howlin’ Wolf…’ Rob Clarke, Arch1 Blues

‘Mesmerising...would do B B King or any of the other Blues legends proud’ **** Broadway BabyDescription goes here

  • Creator, Writer, Composer, Performer- Wellington Hums

A WELLINGTON SOUND CELEBRATION FOR THE COMMUNITY

Inviting everyone in Pōneke to join Wellington Hums.

Mike’s belief is that every built environment hums with its own distinct note. It is the background sound a city creates, like a giant wood, glass, and concrete wind chime. The city channels, fashions and focuses the air into a single sound. But how to find out if this belief resembles reality?

So, Mike set about collecting hums from anyone in Wellington who would send him one. Once gathered, he composed a piece of music inspired the hums. Not content with that, he further crafted this musical composition into a visually and aurally stimulating piece of theatre.

This show is an initial offering, a work in progress that intends to continue growing and expanding and inspiring all sorts of live creative collaboration… music, choral singing, dance, and spoken word, weaving, sculpture, crochet, poetry… there are no limitations in crafting this love letter to Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

    Info & Tix

  • Poster for the show with gradient colours from pink to yellow with a large red splotch in the middle which has the name of the show written in, along with the dates and times of the performances at Edinburgh Fringe Festival

MD, Composer and Performer Fiery Tongues/Poetry Can F*ck Off

WINNER ***OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE*** New Zealand Fringe 2017 (As Fiery Tongues)

Invigorating to be a part of this magnificent piece of polemic poetry about the importance of poetry in revolution, in love, and in life, as long as humans have had words. Written by the inimitable Heathcote Williams and performed by Roy Hutchins, Sameena Zehra, me… and an ever increasing number of foot soldiers for revolution. From Glastonbury to Edinburgh to Pōneke, this one is not done yet.

  • Promotional picture of Mike Dr Blue and Ms Weeds in Costume, standing with their instruments in front of them Mike is holding a Devil's trident, and Ms Weeds is wearing Devil's horns as a headband

MD & Performer - Burlesque & Blues- The Devil's Own

    Nominee ‘Momentous Movement’,
    NZ Fringe 2024.

The show is a new and exciting adventure…a collaboration that merges two performance art forms to create a Burlesque and live Blues extravaganza. The wicked Ms Weeds and the devilish Dr Blue are bringing a night from (delicious) hell to remember with devilish twists from the three piece band, Dr Blue on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Ben Beelzebub McHardy on Drums and Ms Weeds on vocals and cello.

  • Poster for the show; a mustard yellow background with the actor sitting cross legged in the centre, pointing above her to the title of the show. She is surrounded by black line drawings of motifs and objects from the show.

MD, Composer, and Musician Tea with Terrorists. (2022)

'Lovely use of soundscape' Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks

Skilled Sound Design' Katie Hill, Art Murmurs

I had so much fun composing the soundscape for this critically acclaimed show- a rollercoaster ride of dark comedy and delicious storytelling. It was challenging and delightful to write an original score and create an underlying soudscape for stories that span several continents; being dark and absurd, sombre and ridiculous. My first commission from The Magnificent Weirdos, the first of many, I hope!

  • Poet for the Poetry Bistro (2022)

Part of The Performance Arcade in Te Whanganui-a-Tara in 2022, I was delighted to be one of the featured poets as part of  this event, conceived of and produced by Nadia Freeman and Rose Northey. The audience definitely loved it, too, which is always gratifying.

'Beautiful...what a supreme concept and an utter delight. Dr Blue was excellent'

    'Loved the sandcastle smasher'

  • Poster for the show. All the performers are lined up from left to right, looking out over their left shoulders, on a background of red and green, with the show name below. One of the actors has bear head mask on. The others hold instruments

Composer & Musical Director Bear North (2018)

Continuing the exciting and award winning collaboration with Roy Hutchins in this new show, which debuted at Brighton Fringe 2018.

  • Show poster. A close up of Mike, playing his acoustic guitar. The poster is in muted colours with faded imagery in a vintage style behind the show title and show dates

Co-writer, Composer & Performer Irish Jimmy

(Co-written and directed by Sameena Zehra)

Jimmy was my grandfather. He was an old rogue. A warning rather than an example. He lived in interesting times.

This show came about when I realised how much the memories of him and the stories that circulated about him in the family informed my decision to become a pacifist. We live in interesting times.

‘Jimmy’ is 50 minutes of storytelling, interspersed with original songs that is poignant, dark, humorous and life affirming. An exploration of identity, family and how we get to who we become, this beautifully crafted show entertains and mesmerises as you travel through three generations of soldiers & suffragettes, rogues & rebels, songs and stories.

  • Show poster. John, a young white man with very white hair, wearing a black suit jumps in the air with a wild and naughty look on his face. The background is a graffiti ridden side street at night

Composer, MD & Performer. Sweaty Sexy Party Party (2018)

In collaboration with the irrepressible John Robertson.

Jokes, live music, the Rhythmatron Mark II. Anything could happen. It probably will.

'Sheer anarchy...Dr Blue, a sage figure' ***** Broadway World

'Dr Blue plays both music and his allotted role as a straight man wonderfully' ***** One4Review

  • Show poster in an art deco style with a pink backgeound. Monski Mouse is in the centre. She looks excited with a big smile. She is surrounded by her dancers and musicians

MD & Performer Monski Mouse's Baby Cabaret

A new format, from the award-winning creator of Monski Mouse's Baby Disco, which debuted at Brighton Fringe 2018.

    ‘Utterly delightful' ***** Ed Fest

  • A photograph of Mike smiiling widely as he holds up a copy of his poetry pamphlet.

Sin- a collection of poetry Mike 'Dr Blue' Mckeon

I published my very first poetry pamphlet, at last! I launched it at an evening of poetry readings in Brighton, surrounded by the people who inspired me, encouraged me and were instrumental in getting it to print.

It's available for sale when I'm performing at a poetry gig, but perhaps more importantly, it means I can carry my poems as a handy little book in a pocket, rather than a fistful of assorted papers that fly off at inopportune moments.

'Doctor Blue, We love you xx You are proof that poetry isn't dead. Thankyou'

Audience feedback from the Poetry Bistro, Wellington NZ, 2022

    On The Road Again

Originally from the UK, I’m now based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. What better way than a musician’s road trip to discover the delights of the country I now call home. I’m still exploring new towns and cities and meeting wonderful people along the way. I’m bringing you old classics, original songs, guitar, harmonica and a 'swinging bluesy pulse to accompany raw edged vocals' (Adelaide Advertiser). Expect to sing along, tap your feet, and maybe even dance in the aisles as you enjoy an evening of 'Authentic Blues... mesmerising' (*****Broadway Baby).
